WHAT IS IDP?

An International Driving Permit is required if you wish to drive overseas during a short-term stay. You can obtain it under your valid permanent driving license issued by the local government authority.

We facilitate you in applying for and arranging the International Driving Permit (IDP) through AA Ceylon (AAC) at your convenience.

IDP could be handy if you are planning to go abroad and explore the country. May it be a student or work visa, a family or dependent, or maybe even a visit visa. When you get there, you may either use public transport or hire a cab, till you get your valid permanent driving license from the respective country you are in.

But, if you do consider the cost of it, it’s quite expensive. So, what’s the most suitable option then? It’s IDP. Where you can enjoy driving a rented vehicle, or your family or friend’s vehicle without any hassle at a minimal cost for one year with the IDP.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Driving License

An original Sri Lankan Permanent Driving license which must be valid for minimum of 1 year.

Driving License copies

Two Copies of the aforesaid Driving License.

Photo

Three Unmounted photos 1X1/2X 2" with the Ear clearly displayed.

Application form

Duly signed and filled Application form.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official document issued by the Department of Motor Traffic of Sri Lanka that allows you to legally drive in foreign countries when visiting abroad.

Generally, anyone who holds a valid permanent driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Traffic of Sri Lanka can apply for an IDP.

To apply for an IDP, you will need to submit the following.
  • An original valid Driving License and a copy of your valid driver's license
  • 3 passport-sized photos
  • An application form duly filled and signed
  • A letter of authority
  • Applicable fees for the application

An IDP is usually valid for one year from the date of issue.

Note: It cannot be renewed; you will need to apply for a new one if your current IDP expires.

No, an IDP is not a standalone document. It must be used in conjunction with your valid driver's license of Sri Lanka. Moreover, if you intend to stay longer than one year you may need to obtain a temporary or permanent valid driving license from the native country you reside in.

IMPORTANT NOTICE


IDP will not be issued for Temporary Driving Licenses.
An IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue, with a possible grace period of six months.
